Tanker fire, accidents make for a messy Labor Day start
The Labor Day weekend got off to a messy start across Metro Detroit’s freeways this morning as a tanker fire, multiple accidents and construction tied up motorists on their commutes to work.
“It has been a rough morning, but it could have been a lot worse,” said Diane Cross, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Autonomous vehicle bills cruise through Michigan Senate
LANSING, MI — Autonomous vehicles would be able to cruise the streets hands-off and human-free under bills passed by the Michigan Senate on Wednesday.
“We’re moving into the next century, ladies and gentlemen,” said Sen. Mike Kowall, R-White Lake, who sponsored two bills in the bipartisan package.
The bills, which passed unanimously, would act in concert to promote autonomous vehicle development in Michigan.
Michigan Senate committee takes up faster speeds for consideration
Discussion continues this week in Michigan about permitting truckers and other highway users to drive faster – while maintaining the speed differential on the state’s fastest roadways.
Michigan law now authorizes 70 mph speeds for motorists on certain highways while large trucks are limited to 60 mph. On other major roadways the speeds are 65 mph and 55 mph, respectively.
Thousands of gallons of human waste spills onto I-75 following accident
VIENNA TWP, MI — Three lanes of northbound I-75 have been closed in northern Genesee County after a U-Haul vehicle struck the back of a semi-trailer carrying thousands of gallons of human waste.
Clio Area Assistant Fire Chief Kirk Todd said the accident took place shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, causing the material to evacuate itself from the truck onto the interstate just north of the Vienna Road exit.
Man in critical condition after motorcycle struck from behind
Genesee Township police responded shortly after 5:30 p.m. to North Dort Highway, between Coldwater and Stanley roads, for a two-vehicle accident.
Man involved in fatal Frankenmuth hit and run in court for probation violation
SAGINAW, MI — A man who turned himself over to a Saginaw attorney last week in relation to his involvement in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman was in court Tuesday, Sept. 6, facing a probation violation.

Sunday, Aug. 21
• 8:32 a.m. — North Meridian Road near U.S. 10 — Driver Robert Lee Ulmer, 46, Shepherd, was hurt when two vehicles collided. He was treated at the scene by paramedics, the report states. The other driver, Jacquelyn Danielle Broderick, 27, Sanford, was not hurt. Broderick was ticketed for violation of the basic speed law.
Rollover collision results in minor injury, partial road closure
GRAND BLANC TWP., MI — A rollover collision on Saginaw Road closed all but one northbound lane on a section of the roadway Monday night.
Grand Blanc Township police responded to a two-vehicle rollover accident and entrapment call around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 29 on Saginaw Road near the Hill Road intersection.
15 people killed on Bay County roads in 2015
BAY COUNTY, MI — Bay County’s most crash-prone intersection was the site of 30 collisions in 2015. However, none of those crashes were among the 15 countywide that resulted in people’s deaths.
Gagetown woman injured in head-on collision
ELKLAND TOWNSHIP — Two people recently were injured in a two-vehicle crash that took place at the intersection of Bay City-Forestville and Richie roads.
According to the Michigan State Police Caro Post, troopers were called to the scene around 2:15 p.m. Monday for a head-on crash. An investigation revealed a 47-year-old Sebewaing woman was attempting to turn left onto Richie Road and turned into the path of a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Gagetown woman.
