Caseville Mom Dies in Accident
CHANDLER TOWNSHIP — An auto accident claimed the life of Caseville’s Sheila M. Iseler on Thursday afternoon at the corner of Dunn and Maxwell roads. Huron County Sheriff Kelly Hanson said that 21-year-old Shawn Babbitt, also of Caseville, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash. Babbitt’s father, Todd Babbitt Sr., told the Tribune late Friday afternoon that he is on life support.
Iseler, 40, of Caseville, died at the scene after a pickup allegedly ran a stop sign and hit her vehicle at the intersection, deputies reported.

3 West Michigan counties in top 10 for most pedestrian crashes in the state
GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – The number of crashes involving pedestrians has jumped in recent years. According to a study from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian collisions jumped 10-percent nationally in 2015. Experts say the strong economy and higher lever of distractions are two reasons behind the increase.

Livingston County’s worst intersections for injury crashes

Young drivers 3 times more likely to be in serious crash, and 5 more facts
Michigan drivers under age 21 are three times more likely to be in a traffic accident that causes a fatality or serious injury compared to older drivers, according to state statistics. Between 2011 and 2015, Michigan had 32,143 vehicle accidents in which someone was killed or suffered an “incapacitating” injury; 6,777 — or 21 percent — involved a driver under age 21, according to Michigan State Police data.

Michigan residents encouraged to prevent tip-over accidents

School Bus Accident in Roseville reveals Dangerous Intersection
ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WXYZ) – Emergency crews are on the scene after a school bus accident near 11 Mile and Groveland in Roseville. Police say the bus was eastbound on 11 Mile when it T-bones an SUV that was northbound on Groveland. Officials say the SUV ran a stop sign.

New federal campaign hopes to stop train crashes in their tracks
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – Two federal administrations are launching a new campaign to stop train crashes in their tracks. Indiana is home to one of the 15 most dangerous railroad crossings in the U.S. Just two months after a train hit and killed a driver in Michigan City, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Federal Railroad Administration are teaming up to stop these accidents from happening.

Zip line operators need permit under new regulations
Zip line operators in Michigan – like the Howell Nature Center – are now required to obtain a permit and submit to state inspection under new regulations.
Jeannie Vogel, spokeswoman with the state Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, said Thursday that zip line operators need to apply on or before March 1. LARA staff will conduct the inspections and operators should not expect a delay of operations for the 2017 season, she noted.

Slick I-69 causes numerous accidents Wednesday
COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A combination of light snow and temperatures falling just below the freezing mark made for a chaotic scene on northbound I-69 in southern Branch County Wednesday morning.
Between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. a total of eight slide-off accidents were reported, in addition to a semi-trailer rollover. Most of the accidents happened between the Michigan/Indiana border and the Kinderhook exit.

According to a study from the Governor’s Highway Safety Association, pedestrian collisions jumped 10-percent nationally in 2015. Experts say the strong economy and higher lever of distractions are two reasons behind the increase. In the first six months of 2015, more than 2,300 people were killed — 133 more than in 2014. So far in 2017, Kent County has had 20 accidents involving pedestrians. Its an issues city officials are concerned about.
