Zicam Cold Remedy May Damage Sense of Smell
The F.D.A. has issued a warning to consumers against using the popular cold remedy Zicam because it may damage or destroy the sense of smell. In 2006, the manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives, reached a $12 million settlement with more than 340 consumers who claimed that their sense of smell was destroyed. Hundreds more lawsuits have subsequently been filed. Despite the lawsuits, Matrixx has refused to recall the product. Instead the company has stopped distribution of Zicam and says it will offer refunds to consumers who request them. (6/16) New York Times
