Forward-Collision Avoidance Systems Reduce Auto Crashes
A new study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has found that advanced auto technology systems, such as forward-collision avoidance/warning and adaptive headlights, are key to reducing crashes. Forward-collision warning systems use either a camera or radar to determine what lies ahead of a moving vehicle. Warning systems that detect an impending crash with another vehicle and brake automatically are found to be more effective in reducing accidents than systems that do not include automatic braking. Adaptive headlights, which shift direction as a driver steers, assist drivers in seeing around curves and have proven to reduce the risk of a multiple vehicle crash by 10%.
Not all new technologically advanced systems prove to be helpful in reducing accidents. Lane-departure warning systems, which alert a driver when their vehicle drifts out of the lane of travel, actually appear to have a negative effect on crash patterns. Experts believe that drivers may receive false warnings from cameras that read poorly marked lanes. Blind-spot detection and parking assist technologies do not have a positive effect on crash avoidance or prevention.
Typically, advanced technology safety systems are first offered on luxury vehicles. It is estimated that these recently introduced crash avoidance systems will reach most vehicles on the road in about 30 years. The good news is that vehicle accidents will be declining in the future as a result of new technology. However, it will be a slow process as the changes will occur over several decades.
